  1. A window into the life of a CEO

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. To be frank, I lost the desire to write for the last couple weeks.

I had a good chat with Gill (my lovely wife and co-founder) on the way to the airport today and she had a great idea: give people a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to run Carson Systems.

So I’ve decided to start posting things that give you a look at the kind of daily things I deal with as a CEO of a small and growing company. Whenever I wish I knew something about a businessman/woman that I respect, I’ll try to post the same thing about my life. I’m hoping it’ll be interesting for everybody, while also giving me valuable feedback from all of you guys.

I’m about to hop on a plane (going home to see the fam in US of A!) so I don’t have much time now.

    Watch this space!

Sounds promising! (I’m always a fan of any “behind the scenes”-ish content ;)…

In my opinion, since your site has grown substantially, unfortunately, the number of negative responses increase as well. If negative responses from your blogs are starting to affect your thinking and desire, beware that you may be submitting to negative influences which can affect your future success. Don’t let this happen.

      Ryan,

I met you in London a while ago at a Rails workshop you organized, you appeared like a good chap and in my opinion, it’s always interesting to have someone who’s actually making a living out of the web, share their insight. I personally stimulates my eagerness to”join the club of web entrepeneurs”, so don’t let the bxxxxxs get you down and keep posting.

      Romain.

I’m a big fan of yours Ryan, but is it just me that thinks that saying you’re the CEO of a 5 person company is a little umm, grandiose?

I know it’s a popular thing to do, but it always grates with me. Or am I being too English?

      Thanks for the support folks.

It’s just the American in me. I couldn’t help it ;)

I can’t wait either, I was hoping the blog didn’t go down hill. Long time reader and to be honest, there has been very few times that I haven’t been impressed with the content. Continue the good work Ryan! (Also more post’s from Gill wouldn’t go a miss)

      Hey Ryan,

I’ve been following your antics since your first guest post at 37 signals. I’ve always appreciated the openness and honesty of your posts and am looking forward to insights onto the day-to-day running of Carson Systems.
Like Romain above, I’m hoping to take the plunge soon and launch a web application. Soon is taking for ever though .. :)

Keep up the good work fellah!

Like most of your fellow readers, i’m really looking forward to this new series.

Don’t mind this CEO thing, it’s not that american ;-) In Germany where i live, nearly every wannabe starting a company prints “Geschäftsführer” (wich translates to “company leader”) on his stationary, even if his business is a one man show…

A CEO! You are a director of a very small limited company. You are not a CEO.
As an IT Contractor I am also a director of my own company. And last time I checked your accounts at companies house your figures seem significantly smaller than my one man band outfit. Do you have a chief financial officer, COO, CTO and so on reporting to you? are you mainly involved with overall strategy and leadership? Do you report to the board of directors who represent the shareholders?

Your wife and yourself are the only shareholders of a company that worth less than my car, stop pretending you run some mega-enterprise. You simply make money by mainly organizing events. And DropSend is not an amazing web app, it is simply too little too late solution in an already mature market.
